Office of the week!

It’s been a long time that we introduced our favorite design office of the week: This week it’s time to put 51N4E in the spotlights!

51N4E is a design office with international connections, based in the capital city of Belgium, aka Brussels. A team of 20 creative minds supports the 3 leading partners: Johan Anrys, Freek Persyn and Peter Swinnen.
The office draws attention to architectural design, concept development and spatial transformations. They are also involved in projects concerning our heritage, with the example off ‘Winterslag’, an old mine site that is transformed into ‘C-mine’.

51N4E has been rewarded with different international prizes for the architectural projects, while it has recently engaged in the development of strategic visions for large-scale urban regions such as Bordeaux, Brussels and Istanbul.

As usual, we picked 1 projected that attracted us strongly: Buda Art Centre, Kortrijk, B.

This project contains the transformation of the cities last textile factory, located on the Buda Island, an area in the city of Kortrijk, Belgium. This new function would transform the old factory into the cultural heart of the area, with studios and exhibitions space for young artists of the residence.

The large volume is located in the centre of a block and is transformed by to interventions. The first is to hollow out a big void in the volume, so natural light can penetrate into the spaces. The second intervention is to add an open air pavilion as an entrance hall in connection with the street.

The volume is entirely built off yellow bricks that can also be found in the interior of the textile factory.

Cooled Conservatories!

From more than 500 entries, the Cooled Conservatories – part of Gardens by the Bay in Singapore – is chosen as the best building of the year.
The project got the WAF award, aka The World Architecture Festival award, an award that celebrates it’s fifth birthday this year! This green project is designed by Wilkinson Eyre, in association with  Grant Associates, Atelier One and Atelier Ten and resembles the idea of a city in a garden.

The building consists of two glass shells, supported by some arches that are architecturally integrated with the greenhouses to survive the force of nature.Inside this 20.000 square meter – project the horticulture and gardening of the environments that are hardest hit by climate change, explored.

Each year, a few creative students are selected to study ‘Furniture Design’ in Mechelen, Belgium.
Every year in June, they organize a showcase to show off their graduation projects.
After seeing their website, I thought it was really worth it to share it with you!
